Road Traffic Acts

London Borough of Southwark

GAUNT STREET - ACCIDENT REDUCTION MEASURES

THE LONDON BOROUGH OF SOUTHWARK (PARKING PLACES) (CPZ ‘C2’) (AMENDMENT NO. *) ORDER 2009

THE LONDON BOROUGH OF SOUTHWARK (WAITING AND LOADING RESTRICTIONS) (AMENDMENT NO. *) ORDER 2009

1.  NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the London Borough of Southwark (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) propose to make the above-mentioned Orders under sections 6, 45, 46, 49 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

2.  The general effect of the (Waiting & Loading Restrictions) Order would be, in GAUNT STREET, to introduce new lengths of ‘At any time’ Waiting Restrictions (i) on the north-east side between the north-western kerb-line of Newington Causeway and a point 16 metres north-east of that kerb-line; (ii) on the south-west side, between the north-western kerb-line of Newington Causeway and a point 14 metres north-east of that kerb-line; and (iii) to introduce a new ‘Solo Motorcycles Only’ parking place, 4.5 metres in length, on the north-east side in which solo motorcycles may be left without charge or time limit.

3.  The general effect of the (Parking Places) Order would be, in GAUNT STREET, to extend an existing ‘pay and display’ parking place on the north-east side by 5 metres, in which passenger or goods vehicles of less than 2.28 metres in height, solo motorcycles or invalid carriages may be left for a maximum stay of 2 hours, provided they display a valid ticket from a ticket parking meter.

4.  FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council, under sections 90A to 90I of the Highways Act 1980 and in accordance with the provisions of the Highways (Road Humps) Regulations 1999 and the Highways (Traffic Calming) Regulations 1999, propose to construct a speed table of flat top construction, covering the entire width of the carriageway and level with the surrounding kerb in GAUNT STREET at its junction with Newington Causeway, extending from the north-western kerb-line of Newington Causeway north-westward for a distance of 13 metres.

5.  These measures are intended to improve road safety and address an accident trend at this location. The narrowing of this junction with kerb build-outs will prevent two vehicles turning right simultaneously - which has been identified as the main cause of recorded collisions at this junction. The raised table would reduce vehicle approach speeds to this junction and aid pedestrians crossing at this location.

6.  Further information may be obtained by telephoning Mr. Chris Mascord of the Council’s Public Realm Projects team on: 020 7525 5385.

7.  Copies of the proposed Orders and other documents giving more detailed particulars of the proposals can be inspected at the Reception Desk, Walworth Old Town Hall, 151 Walworth Road, London SE17 1RY during normal office hours on Mondays to Fridays inclusive.

8.  Persons desiring to object to the proposals, or make any other representations in respect of them, should send a statement in writing to that effect, and in the case of an objection, stating the grounds thereof to: the Traffic Orders Officer, Public Realm - Network Development, Southwark Council, Old Town Hall, 151 Walworth Road, London SE17 1RY, quoting reference PR/ND/RDH/TMO0809-050 by 29th January 2009.

9.  Under the Local Government (Access to Information) Act 1985, any letter you write in response to this Notice may be made available to the press and to the public, who would be entitled to take copies of it if they so wished.
