What is the Health and Safety Law Poster?

The official HSE Law Poster tells workers what they and their employers need to do to ensure their health and safety in the workplace. In simple terms, using numbered lists of basic points, the poster outlines what employers must do, what workers must do and what to do if there are concerns with health and safety in the workplace.

The poster outlines:

  • what employers must do for their employees
  • what workers must do
  • what to do if there are concerns with health and safety in the workplace

Do all employers need to display the Health and Safety Law Poster?

The Health and Safety Information for Employees Regulations 1989 legislation requires that all employers need to either display the HSE-approved Law Poster or provide each of their workers with the equivalent leaflet.

All employers have a legal duty to display the official HSE poster in a prominent position in the workplace, ensuring that all workers can read it and have access to it. If there is not one central area that all employees use and have access to, then employers should consider placing posters in multiple locations, ensuring they are visible to all employees.

Communal areas employers might consider displaying the poster include:

  • staff rooms
  • kitchens
  • reception areas
  • office spaces

If a company has more than one building on a site, then there should be Health and Safety Law Posters in each building.

Where can I get the Health and Safety Law Poster?

The Health and Safety Law Poster can be purchased directly from HSE Books.

Available in either A2 or A3 sizes, HSE recently published a more durable reprint of the Health and Safety Law Poster which includes enhanced security features. Printed on fully recyclable PP5 plastic, the updated poster features quality UV-fast ink that will stay readable for up to 5 years even in direct sunlight.

It should be noted that there is no change to the written content in the 2018 reprinted version, and no legal requirement for owners of the older Law Poster to replace it with a new one.
